Customer Support
What kind of support do they offer? Email only? Phone? What are their hours?

Be aware of where they are located. They might be half way around the world from you. It might be daytime where you are but the middle of the night where they are, if that’s the case you will want someone with 24 hour support.

Discount rate vs. monthly fees
Some companies offer low discount rates but high monthly fees. If your sales are low, you will have a hard time benefiting from those low discount rates as the fees will eat into your profits.

Example:

B                     $0                   25%                            $100               $75

In the example above, Company B is clearly the best choice despite it’s discount rate being more than 8 times higher than Company A’s.

Now watch what happens when your sales rise to $300

B                     $0                   25%                            $300               $225

Suddenly the $30 monthly fee starts to look insignificant. If you don’t sign a long term deal, starting with Company B and then switch to company A once your sales rise might be the way to go.

Pay period
How soon do you need your money? Some payment processors will only release your funds to you once they reach a certain minimum (usually around $500 to $600) Others pay monthly or twice monthly

Which cards do you want to accept?
Not all payment processors accept all cards, you might want to take this into account when choosing.
